Many parents teach their children if they get lost in a store or some other public setting, they should go to a mother with a child and ask her for help. Why? Because up until now mothers with children were considered a safer bet than going up to a complete stranger as far as children were concerned. The murder of Sandra Cantu has many parents shaking their heads wondering, who can we trust?!
Melissa Huckaby, who is accused of raping eight year-old Sandra Cantu with a foreign object and then murdering her, is a far cry from the image the public has of a dangerous pedophile preying on children. Ms. Huckaby is the mother of a five year-old daughter and is also a Sunday school teacher; not exactly the description that comes to mind when one worries about someone doing harm to their child.
As with all pedophiles that are eventually caught, they leave behind a long list of other victims in their path and in Huckaby’s case we are learning that Sandra Cantu may very well not be her first victim. According to the Tracy Press another seven year-old child, who lives in the same Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park as Sandra, was also kidnapped for four hours and drugged back in January. The child went missing for four hours and taken to a nearby park.
The Tracy police have now tied Huckaby to this incident as well. According to Huckaby, she claims that she had permission from the grandmother to take the little girl to the park, but the mother and older sister of the seven year-old deny that fact. The child was missing from around 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. The girl’s 18 year-old sister claims that when the child came home, she “couldn’t walk and could barely stand up.” The family took her to the hospital where doctors found benzodiazepines in her bloodstream. The drug is a muscle relaxant and a class of drugs that includes Librium and Valium.
The way I see it, Huckaby drugged the 7 year-old and then sexually molested her, which is probably what also happened to Sandra Cantu. More than likely, Sandra overdosed on the drugs that Huckaby gave her and accidentally died. Huckaby then panicked, put her body in a suitcase and dumped it in the irrigation pond.
Maya Muses: The big question, however, is - if you can’t trust a Sunday school teacher who happens to be a mother as well, then who can you trust?
