If you put two socks in the washer or dryer, then why does only one come back out?
Do you ever wonder what happened to your other sock? You take your clothes out of the dryer and fold them. Then you start matching you socks, and lo and behold, one of your socks has become a widow or widower! You un-fold your clothes, you shake them out, and you still can’t find it. Then you go back and double check both the washer and dryer to make sure you somehow didn’t miss it the first time around, and still no sock!
Where did it go? I’ll tell you. It went to a parallel universe! I think physicists studying quantum mechanics should look into the spin cycles of washers and dryers. There must be an ideal impetus with the velocity and weight of the sock in question that is perfect for the sock to propel itself into another dimension. Some socks manage to make that intergalactic journey again and find their way back home; other socks are lost in space forever.
Who knows, our socks may be the pioneers of space travel. We may all one day have a huge washer in our homes where we just jump in, click on the spin cycle, and take off to another galaxy or to a parallel universe! So next time you wash your socks, bid them a Bon Voyage! You can be almost certain that one of them will be taking off into the Great Unknown.
Maya Muses: One solution to disappearing socks would be to buy all the same socks and you’ll always have a pair. Or, wear different socks and start a new trend. If someone says, “Hey, you’re wearing two different socks!” Just tell them, “You’re not really seeing what you think you’re seeing, it’s all Maya!”
