I love getting e-mails from my friend Sandy because I know that whatever she sends, it’s going to be cute, fun, or practical. Thanks to Sandy I have written a number of posts. One was about the crazy things that people do with food. There are some great photos of creative people sculpting food. My favorite is the last, the watermelon swimmer; a must see! She also sent the cutest baby photos that are guaranteed to put a smile on your face. The most recent post I did was the one about Andy Rooney’s view of women over 50; his last comment about “…why buy the cow when….” was hilarious!!! LOL!!!
This time Sandy sent practical information and with the summer months coming upon most of us, everyone needs this information. (Sorry it’s getting to be a little late for many of my readers in the Southern Hemisphere, but keep it in mind for later!

It seems that the best way to get rid of pesky house flies is to fill a Ziploc (plastic) bag with water and drop a few pennies in it. The number of pennies you need to use is somewhat up for dispute going anywhere from 1 to 5, but most people agree not to use more than five. I say, why bicker and just use three! You then hang the bags in direct sunlight and voilà, no more flies!
People swear it works! Why? No one knows for sure. There are a lot of different theories as to why this works. Some say that the water and the pennies give a prism effect and it causes a dizzying movement for the flies which would make them easy prey for other bugs, birds, etc. Others say it gives a “spider web” effect and still others say that the way water refracts light frightens the flies. Seems odd because flies are always around water, swamps, etc.

If pennies work, why not goldfish?
Maya Muses: I say who cares what the reason is as long as it works! Imagine how nice it would be having a picnic with no flies!!! I hope it’s not just an old wives’ tale! I’ll be sure to try it this summer, but I wonder, has anyone tried it and, more importantly, does it work?

I’ve never tried it, but at my next outdoor cookout I will. I’ll let you know if it works.

That’ll be great if it does work, Pam. Like I told Meredith, I’m sure Patrick will be trying it out the first chance he gets!
