Somehow poetry and politics do not make good bedfellows! I found that out tonight, but I think I should have been looking at my planets! Friends invited Patrick and I to go have a drink at a local pub where on Monday nights they have an “open mike” and anyone can go up and read their poetry.
The twist this evening, however, on the eve of the elections was that everyone who got up was suppose to say who they thought would win tomorrow’s election! (Who had that bright idea?!) After commenting, each person would then proceed to read his or her poetry. Now think about it, these are poets we’re talking about. As each person went up to
the mike, they very diplomatically said things like ”….regardless of who wins, I wish all the best for the US as a nation….”, or ”…..I hope that everyone will support our new president no matter who it is…..”, well, you get the picture. Yet, in the end they all finally admitted Obama had it in the bag.
Now! I had no intentions of going up to the mike this evening, but everyone at the table kept asking me if I was going to recite my poetry. Well after a couple glasses of a very nice Chilean red wine (no dinner because it was still relatively early in the evening) I decided at the last minute I would give it a go!
I went up to the mike and told everyone that I had gone on the internet to see what
astrologers were predicting about the outcome of the race. I went into detail about a very good astrologer who said that the planets and aspects showed that early in the evening it would look like Obama won, but as the night progressed the outcome would be that McCain would win the election.
Well! Did I open up a can of worms or what! I was being booed off the stage before I even began to recite my poetry! LOL! These passive poets were getting ready to pounce on me like piranhas, when I said, “Hey! Don’t kill the messenger, I’m just telling you what an astrologer said!”
Maya Muses: Needless to say, some people did not wait for my poetry reading and walked out! (LOL!) The ones that did stay, however, did receive it quite warmly! Patrick said afterwards, “Leave it to you to change peaceful poets all evening into raving radicals!”
