Michael Phelps – To Swim Or Not To Swim, That Is The Question

August 19th, 2008 · 6 Comments

Michael PhelpsWho hasn’t heard about the feats and glory of Michael Phelps in the Beijing Olympics!?  It took 36 years for an athelete to surpass Mark Spitz’s incredible 7 gold medal win in 1972 at the Olympic Games in Munich!  (I just so happened to have been there!)  Michael Phelps not only won 8 gold medals, he also set 7 world records!  It may take another 36 years for another athelete to come along and beat what he has done this past week.  Then again, the record may never be broken.  Who knows!?

Mark SpitzMichael Phelps should go out in glory and be remembered at the top of his game!  More than likely he himself will not be able to accomplish what he did this year when he competes in the Olympic Games in London in 2012.  Michael has already said he will compete again in four years.  I think he wants to assure his medal record, much like Lance Armstrong in the Tour de France.  A mistake if you ask me.  I’m sure he feels he may be able to repeat what he did in the Beijing Games, but I’m not so sure!

Maya Muses:  Even if Michael Phelps wins 3, 4, or 5 gold medals in 2012, it will be a let down to what he has accomplished here.  If you ask me, I say go out while you’re on the top!  (Or will he prove me wrong and I’ll have to eat my words?)

Well,You will find that out eventually, won’t you?
Everyone are doing it “Their Way”in life….

    Ulf is a great swimmer,by the way…

When I met him he was a promising young swimmer in our local swim-club…
It was, and still is wonderful to see him swim…
    It looks so easy…

Anyway,he always competed with himself when he was in a swim-competition,never against somebody else…
He swam fast, but never had that drive in him to become The Best,so he didn’t, and he was happy with that….
Then he thought that it took too much of his time and energy that was needed to become better, faster…so he stopped…

He still enjoys to swim of course…but for the joy of it!

I know how much time, energy, and focus it takes to reach the top and to stay there….
    4 more years are a long time….
But as long as Michael Phelps has the motivation and knows why he is doing it,then go for 2012, I say.
    If not…then I agree with you,totally…

( we just happened to have been to one of Mark Spitz’s lecture 1978 when he visited Sweden..He was great!)

After listening to Michael Phelps speak in an interview, I think he has the motivation to want to accomplish in 2012 what he did in Beijing. As a matter of fact, that was his goal in Athens four years ago when he won 6 gold and 2 bronze medals at age 19. At 23 in Beijing,… age was working for him, making him stronger. At 27 in London, age will be working against him as a swimmer. He has to think about that.

Or am I wrong? Is 27 not too old to compete with the greatest in the world, when most swimmers are in their late teens and early twenties. Ulf would surely know! Then again, look at Dara Torres who is 41 years old and has been to 5 Olympic Games and won 3 medals in Beijing! (Hmm,…am I contradicting myself here!?)

    You are!But that is Life!

It will always come new, young ones, eager to compete with the “older”ones….

I asked Ulf…He says it is all about motivation…
If you have the will to go on competing and see yourself as the winner!

When other things start to be more important then it is time to stop!

And it is after all just a “game”….Sometimes you win and sometimes you loose….T

Michael Phelps does have the motivation! And Ulf is right….if you see yourself as a winner, then you’ll probably win. Part of creating our own reality once again, but you also have to feel it and believe for it to work!

    So true!
I think to really feel and trust that it will happen are the most important factors! And to be a bit childlike!
Did you see Usain Bolt running?
    What a man!I love him!

Yes! What was crazy was how far ahead he was to all the other runners and then he just crusied to the finish line! If he had gone full speed ahead his timing would have been even more incredible than what it was! (What are they feeding the Jamaican runners is what I want to know!)
