The person who has the most talent doesn’t always win and nice guys don’t always finish last! Kevin Skinner is living proof that Americans love a “rags to riches” story and that talent is not the number one priority when voting on America’s Got Talent!
Who was the more talented singer on yesterday’s show? Barbara Padilla of course! To try and compare the vocal talent between Barbara and Kevin Skinner is like comparing Cristal Champagne to Cooks! The clarity in Barbara’s voice and the vocal range spanning several octaves, is amazing, while Kevin Skinner’s voice is all right within a 5-note span, anything outside of that he goes flat and struggles to hit the note.
That said, I like Kevin Skinner! The first time he appeared before the judges as an unemployed chicken catcher was magical! The purity in his voice that evening and the emotions he conveyed when he sang “If Tomorrow Never Comes” made him a media darling much like Susan Boyle.
(Susan version of “Wild Horses”, by the way, was amazing and showcased her beautiful voice. No, Susan didn’t win Britian’s Got Talent, instead she came in second, but she’s well on her way to an exciting career. I know Barbara Padilla will follow in her footsteps. Coming in second yesterday evening will not hinder Barbara’s career either.)
But!!! Back to Kevin Skinner. He did something so magical that first evening that he made millions of people cry with just his voice and his guitar. Unfortunately, he never found that magic again as he advanced in the competition. It didn’t matter, however, people fell in love with him and continued to vote for him, hoping to recapture whatever it was he had in that first audition. The consensus was, if he could do it once - he could do it again! ….But, can he? I hope so! With the right training and voice coach, with the right mixing in the studios, and with the right people surrounding him, Kevin Skinner can go far because people are rooting for him.
Maya Muses: Although there’s no comparing Barbara’s magnificent voice with Kevin’s, I sat there yesterday waiting for the winner to be announced and I thought, I’ll be happy with either one winning. If Barbara wins, she deserves to win, but if Kevin wins, I’ll be just as happy because I really like the guy, and that’s saying a hell of a lot!!!
