All the people who have been snowed in under wintery and icy conditions for the past few months will not be happy to hear that Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow at sunrise this morning and, therefore, there will be six more weeks of winter!
For those of you who don’t know who Punxsutawney Phil is, I guess you haven’t seen the film Groundhog Day! That’s okay! Phil (and his ancestors) have been
predicting the weather forecast since 1887 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Each year tourists arrive in this small town, about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, for the annual Groundhog Day festivities.
After the Pittsburgh Steelers’ win, there were quite a number of Terrible Towels waving in the crowd of about 13,000 this morning just after dawn. In a town of about 6,100 inhabitants, Punxsutawney more than doubles in size on Groundhog Day as residents and tourist alike make their way to Gobbler’s Knob to hear the proclamation!
Maya Muses: Punxsutawney Phil takes it all in stride! Afterall, it’s only one day out of the year that people disturb his sleep and wake him up before dawn and he’s used to it! That’s more than we can say for some imitators out there! Apparently Staten Island Chuck forgot about his “new job” and bit Mayor Bloomberg for getting him out of a cozy sleep!
