French Elle – Au Naturel

April 16th, 2009 · 4 Comments

Monica BellucciEight European stars are featured in this month’s issue of French Elle!  I think it’s a wonderful idea of finally showing  women without makeup, and more importantly, without any retouching, airbrushing, or photoshopping done to their photos!  No, I’m not talking about photographs circulated by the paparazzi when a star is caught in the most unflattering of circumstances imaginable!

French Elle has captured photos of Charlotte Rampling, Sophie Marceau, Monica Bellucci, Karin Viard, Chiara Mastroianni, Eva Herzigova, Inès de la Fressange, and Anne Parillaud.  These eight women decided to take the plunge; not that the water was so deep!  These are still beautiful women with or without makeup!  When you see Monica Bellucci, 44, with perfect Sophie Marceaueyebrows or Sophie Marceau, 42, with her flawless complexion, you can understand why they decided to let themselves be photographed by the well-known photographer Peter Lindbergh.

More importantly than showing their true beauty, these women are showing just how ridiculous it has become to make anyone that appears on the cover of any magazine perfect!  The fashion industry as well as television and films have created a Mayaland that just doesn’t exist!  As Sophie Marceau stated, “On a tous besoin de naturel. Quand on me retouche sur une photo, je ne me retrouve pas”.  We all need to be natural.  When my photo is retouched, I don’t recognize myself.

Maya Muses:  Unfortunately most women when we head out the door, we feel a need to put on our masks and there’s nothing wrong with it if it’s something we enjoy doing.  When it becomes a burden, yet we feel pressured to put our so-called best self forward, that’s when psychologically this image we must portray is controlling us.  What do you think?

When you look like that, who needs makeup! I do think it’s crazy the emphasis that is put on physical beauty to sell anything and everything.

Unfortunately young girls are caught up in this idea that you’re not worth much unless you look like the girls on the cover of magazines!

Deena, you hit the nail right on the head! As we age we know what our true worth truly is. What’s most worrisome to me is, as you say, the young girls who are so impressionable and they feel they have to live up to certain standards that are put upon them by their peers and society.

I applaud Elle and companies like Dove for showing a woman’s beauty as they are naturally.

In the US women wear much more makeup than women do in France. I don’t understand why, it’s not appealing to men. For me as a Frenchman, I think women look more beautiful with little or no makeup.

Hmm, we’ve talked about this before….it’s true that many French women go without makeup, but quite often they look just as beautiful without! Then again, many French women wear as much makeup as American women, however, they know how to put on makeup so it looks like they’re hardly wearing any. I think that’s the secret!
