I like Christiane Amanpour and have admired her as a serious news reporter for quite some time. That said, I find that CNN’s chief international correspondent was vying for tabloid sensationalism when she asked French President Nicolas Sarkozy whether he regretted calling Black and Arab youths rioting in the streets of France a few years back, “scum”. This question was clearly asked to make Sarozy squirm (which she accomplished, a little) standing next to Barack Obama today; a man who is part Arab/part Black on his father’s side.
I’m by no means sticking up for Sarko who answered her question quite well, but who also told his countrymen when they protested that they could no longer afford to fill up their gas tanks, then “ride a bike!” It’s just that Christiane Amanpour was not deign to her usual high standards of asking important and relevant questions.
Maya Muses: Ms. Amanpour, you’ve been reading too many National Enquirer, US, and People magazines in your spare time!
