A Lotus Grows in the Mud

Goldie HawnWhen I started reading what I thought was an autobiography by Goldie Hawn, I was prepared for a funny, nonsensical, blah, blah, blah tale about her Hollywood life. What I found instead, was a book about a hardworking, sensitive, intelligent woman on a quest for happiness. Although I was looking for a light and easy to read book for the beach (the kind that if you’re interrupted, or you read a few pages here and there, you really don’t care) sort of book, what I found was anything but! What a pleasant surprise in reading Goldie Hawn’s A Lotus Grows in the Mud.

A Lotus Grows in the MudIt’s not the sort of celebrity memoir sprinkled with anedotes of other celebrity names, instead it’s a spiritual journey through life. A life that is filled with serendipitous twists and turns, but also a life much like our own with highs and lows; good times and bad. Her early years of childhood; the growing pains as the butt of a cruel joke when the boy she has a crush on smashes a piece of cake into her face at a school dance; or the innocence of childhood taken away from her one Christmas Eve by one of her older sister’s male friends.

Goldie during her Laugh-In days.As with all of us on this journey through life, Goldie Hawn takes us through moments in her life that have a lasting effect on who she would become as a grown woman. A woman admired by many and still seen as the kooky girl from Laugh-In; a persona that has remained with her throughout the years, and in spite of herself. The hardships of getting that big break that her daughter and the children of so many of Hollywood’s royalty can only take for granted. We cringe along with her as she dances on a table top at a seedy “…fifth-rate truck stop…” in New Jersey for $30 a night.

GoldieAs she travels to Russia, India, Peru and other parts of the globe, we encounter the everyday people who have touched her life, and the lives of the people whom she has touched as well. Who can forget little Luis a four year old child living on the streets of Lima alone fighting for survival? Or Aldo, the charming old Italian from Livorno with his tragic romantic tale? Goldie gives us words of wisdom like verses of poetry unfolding before her life and we feel privileged to be able to glimpse a part of her that so many of us probably have never imagined.

A Lotus Grows in the Mud is truly an adequate title for the life of Goldie Hawn. As Kutenla, the Nechung Oracle ordained by the Dalai Lama, says, “The lotus is the most beautiful flower, whose petals open one by one. But it will only grow in mud. In order to grow and gain wisdom, first you must have the mud – the obstacles of life and its suffering.”

Maya Muses:  In my opinion, fan or not, Goldie has gone through the mud to emerge as a beautiful flower.   This book is a surprisingly great read!

Mia, I hope you will write your book. You have a great way of communicating in English, so I can only imagine how wonderful you write in your native Swedish! I would definitely read your story which sounds intriguing!

Hmm, that being the case, it’s actually an ongoing story that hasn’t reached its conclusion yet.
